Stoke City have been relegated from the English Premier League following their 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at the bet365 stadium on Saturday.
The Potters are without a win in 13 games.
Xherdan Shaqiri scored a brilliant free-kick two minutes before the break to give Stoke City the lead after a scrappy start.
James McArthur made it 1-1 for Crystal Palace in the 69th minute before Van Aanholt sealed the win four minutes from time.
Stoke City started slowly but grew into the game and were close to getting the lead through Mame Biram Diouf’s glanced header.
With two minutes left to play in the first half, Shaqiri was fouled 25 yards out but he shrugged off the pains to curl in his eighth goal of the season.
At the restart, Stoke sat deep to defend their goal and they were duly punished by the Eagles.
McArthur finished off a pass from Ruben Loftus-Cheek from a counter-attack move.
With scores level again, Stoke came out in search of a winner and were left exposed at the back.
Christian Benteke and Wilfred Zaha failed to take the chances that came their way in the closing stages of the game.
Four minutes from time Van Aanholt scored the winner for Crystal Palace from another counter-attack after some poor defending from Ryan Shawcross.
Paul Lambert’s men are 19th in the EPL with 30 points from 37 games and will play in the second-tier next season. Crystal Palace are 11th with 41 points.
