Suarez Faces Stern FIFA Sanction For Biting Chiellini

By Solomon Ojeagbase, Brazil:

FIFA has officially charged Uruguay striker Luis Suarez with a bite assault on Italy defender Giorgi Chiellini in their 2014 World Cup Group D match.

It looked like a head-butt when the incident first happened during the match, but when the video replay and pictures were released, it seemed as though Luis Suarez had his teeth to the shoulders of Chiellini.

FIFA announced earlier Wednesday that its Disciplinary Committee had started an inquest into l
the Suarez case, just hours after the end of the match on Tuesday.

If the panel finds Suarez guilty of biting an opponent, FIFA rules call for a ban of at least two matches up to a maximum of 24 months.

FIFA asked Italy to provide evidence including video footage of the incident on or before 9pm Nigerian time on Wednesday.

If Italy comply accordingly, a decision could be taken and published before Uruguay’s Round of 16 match against Colombia on Saturday.

Suarez who has had a notorious history of biting opponents during matches had also been sanctioned by the English FA for a biting Chelsea’s defender Branislav Ivanovic two seasons ago in the Premier League.
