The game at the Vicarage Road came to life in the ninth minute when Nathaniel Chalobah’s header from a Tom Cleverley cross was cleared off the line.
Brighton responded through Anthony Knockaert whose shot was parried by Heurelho Gomes in the 23rd minute.
Two minutes later Miguel Britos was sent off for a rough foul on Knockaert.
In the 38th minute, Chalobah missed a chance to score his first goal of the season when his shot sailed inches off the upright.
In the second half, Brighton piled more pressure to get the opener with efforts from Knockaert, Tommer Hemed and Jose Izquierdo who squandered a chance outside the box five minutes from time.
In other results, Newcastle recorded their first win of the season with a 3-0 thumping of West Ham.
Joselu, Ciaran Clark and Aleksandar Mitrovic were on the scoresheet for the Magpies.
At Selhurst Park, Swansea bagged their first win of the campaign with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace while Huddersfield Town and Southampton played a goalless draw.
