Super Eagles forward Isaac Success was left out as Liverpool and Watford played out a dramatic 3-3 draw at Vicarage Road in the first Saturday game of the 2017/2018 English Premier League season, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Stefano Okaka, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Miguel Britos scored for Watford, while Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, with his debut goal, were on the scoresheet for Liverpool.
Watford had only managed to score in two of their last six matches against the Reds before Saturday’s game.
Marco Silva’s team romped into the lead in the eighth minute through Nigerian-born Italy international Okaka when he got to the end of a Jose Holebas corner and planted the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
Senegal international Mane equalised for Liverpool in the 29th minute after a delightful interchange with Emre Can before unleashing a shot to the top-right hand corner.
Doucoure restored Watford’s lead with 17 minutes to play in the first half with a close-range finish, profiting from a Tom Cleverly cross into the penalty box.
Liverpool scored two more goals courtesy of Firmino (penalty) and Salah in the 55th and 57th minutes.
Cameroon international Joel Matip rose high to head the ball off a corner but it only hit the crossbar in the 65th minute while Salah went close again in the 77th minute but saw his low shot hit the side of the net.
Britos snatched a vital draw for Watford with a perfect header from close range in the 94th minute.
Liverpool will host Crystal Palace in their next league game and Watford visit the Vitality Stadium both next Saturday.
