Rivers United beat Wikki Tourists 1-0 in their Nigeria Professional Football League Super-Four match-day 3 game at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu on Sunday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Guy Kuemian netted the decisive goal five minutes into the game.
Both sides went into the game knowing that a win will put them at the top of the log pending the outcome of the second game of the day between Enugu Rangers and FC IfeanyiUbah.
It was Rivers United who seized the initiative in the fifth minute with Kuemian scoring the opening goal.
The Ivorian forward capitalized on a defensive blunder by Abdullahi Musa and rounded up Emeka Nwabulu before slotting the ball into the net.
Wikki improved after that setback but were unable to carve out any real goal scoring opportunity.
Kuemian came close to scoring his second of the game following another defensive mistake by Wikki defenders but his effort creeped just wide.
Festus Umanah had Wikki's best chance of the first half but his dangerous shot was tipped over by Abiodun Akande on 15 minutes.
The tempo of the game reduced in the second half with the two coaches bringing in fresh faces.
Muktari Alhassan wasted an opportunity to score for Wikki in 67th minute but he blazed his shot wide.
Seven minutes later, River United captain, Austine Festus prevented Christopher Waziri's free kick from going via a headed clearance.
Mohammed Babaganaru's side pressed on relentlessly but were unable to find the leveller.
