Terry Emerges Highest Scoring Defender

John Terry became the highest scoring defender in Premier League history on Sunday as he opened the scoring for Chelsea against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues captain rose highest to powerfully head home a Cesc Fabregas corner in the fifth minute, netting the 39th top-flight goal of his career in the process.

The 34-year-old, who has scored in each of the last 15 seasons, moved clear of former Everton left back David Unsworth, who hit the back of the net on 38 occasions in the top division.

Terry drew level with Unsworth late last month when he poked home Chelsea’s winning goal in their 3-1 win against Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

His header against Brendan Rodgers’ men was his fifth Premier League goal of the season, leaving him above the likes of Manchester United’s Radamel Falcao, Liverpool forward Mario Balotelli and Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko in the goalscoring charts.

Terry’s total of 39 goals is made more impressive by the fact he does not take penalties – something Unsworth was famous for during his lengthy career with teams including West Ham, Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic.

The 41-year-old, who is now Everton’s Under 21 coach, sits 10 goals ahead of former Leeds left back Ian Harte, another set-piece specialist.

Current Toffees defender Leighton Baines, who was the club’s regular penalty taker until earlier this season, sits fourth on the all-time list having bagged 26 goals Premier League goals.

The England defender has scored twice this season to move ahead of ex-Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham defender William Gallas, who netted 25 times during 12 yeas in London.
