Toffees Feared Missing Out On Mina

Everton director of football Marcel Brands feared the club would not be able to sign Yerry Mina following his heroics at the World Cup. Colombia international Mina was one of four players to join the Toffees on transfer deadline day after he completed his €30.25million move from Barcelona.

The 23-year-old had been one of Everton’s primary transfer targets throughout the summer, but Brands has now revealed he thought he had missed out on the centre-back following his impressive displays at the World Cup, particularly when he scored a late equaliser against England during the knockout stages.

“From the beginning we had Mina on our list,” Brands told the Liverpool Echo. “I was watching England versus Colombia in the house of Farhad (Moshiri) with the chairman and Marco (Silva) and I said: ‘Oh no, he’s scored.’

“Because that makes it more difficult for us and especially as it came against England.”

Mina’s World Cup heroics also meant Barcelona wanted a higher fee if they were to part ways with the former Palmeiras defender, but Brands stood firm before ultimately sealing the deal with a matter of minutes remaining on transfer deadline day.

“You saw in Barcelona, they were expecting bigger offers for Mina in the last days of the Premier League window, that is why they waited,” Brands added.

“Then it is a little bit of a gamble. I could maybe have had Mina earlier but then would have to pay £5m more and I didn’t want to spend anymore money, so that is always a little bit of a gamble and that makes it a little bit tricky and a little bit difficult.”
