Too Expensive To Replace Mahrez – Puel

Manager Claude Puel admits replacing Riyad Mahrez was “too expensive” and hopes his players can fill the void left by the Algerian. Mahrez had long been linked with an exit from the King Power Stadium and Manchester City finally got their man this summer, with the Citizens paying £60m to land the 27-year-old.

Several names were mentioned as possible successors to the talented schemer, with Thorgan Hazard and Felipe Anderson linked to the east Midlanders.
However, a big-name signing did not materialise, although James Maddison arrived from Championship club Norwich City and Rachid Ghezzal from Monaco, with the boss then focussing recruitment on his defence.

Puel has now stated that he could not find the right player at the right place to take over from Mahrez and wants to spread the duties that the African performed among his remaining midfielders.
“We lost Riyad and we cannot replace him with his quality,” he told Fansided. “And about the price also because it’s too expensive to buy this player.
“It was important to give those attributes for the squad and to share the responsibility in the team.
“Not just Maddison, but for the future it will be also Ghezzal or different players. We try to give good additions for the squad with different talented players and we will see this in the next games.”
