Townsend Hails Palace’s Youth System

Andros Townsend has praised Crystal Palace’s youth set-up and the persistence to keep giving young players a chance to shine. Having avoided Premier League relegation last season, the Eagles were expected to invest heavily in the squad this summer, but it has been a modest transfer window for manager Roy Hodgson.

Senegal international Cheikhou Kouyate arrived from West Ham United for a rumoured £9.5million, Jordan Ayew joined from Swansea City on a season-long loan deal whilst both Max Meyer and Vicente Guaita were snapped up on free transfers.

Huge importance has been placed on the youth set-up at Selhurst Park in recent years and Townsend, who started Saturday’s 2-0 league win at Fulham, has praised the club for their stance on young players.

“Bringing through young players saves you in the transfer market,” he told London News. “It saves you spending big money on other players if you’re producing players like Aaron [Wan-Bissaka], Sullay [Kaikai] and Jonny [Williams] – it means you can reinvest elsewhere.

“Hopefully, there are one or two more coming through the academy who can put pressure on us to stay in the team.”
