Troost-Ekong: Super Eagles Will Continue To Improve

By James Agberebi:

Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has promised that he and his teammates will continue to work hard ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after their friendlies with Poland and Serbia, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Super Eagles rounded off their international friendly games this month with a 2-0 defeat to Serbia on Tuesday in London.

Two second-half strikes from Aleksandar Mitrovic earned the World Cup-bound Serbians the deserved win.

However, last Friday the Eagles pipped Poland 1-0 in Wroclaw thanks to a Victor Moses penalty.

“End of a good camp with the Super Eagles. We keep working and improving. Thanks everyone for your support,” Troost-Ekong wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

    Must Read: Gernot Rohr.

This is my humble reaction and submission to those in the Nff, admistrative authorities, concerned high stakeholders and friends who called to demand for a critical explanation for SE woeful showing & loss to Serbia.
First, I will explain that these matches are WC preparatory, or test matches and results would vary. Only a bad Coach would insist on fielding his strongest side, and not experiment to determine his best materials leading to the main event.
I salute the courage & focus of Coach Gernot Rohr for always cleverly shielding his plans from the prying eyes of rival Spies & paid Hawks.
I respect his tactics & strategies.
He is a very good tactician! I applaud the Coach.
SE have nothing else to prove.
The Coach could have won still, if he wanted to, he knew what to do, trust me. But to what purpose? Nigerians must know that football is a strategic game of cons, intrigues & delusions. It demands knowledge, intrigues & intelligence to execute a strategic winning plan.
Gernot Rohr told the world that he wasn’t desperate to win the Serbian game. Implying that he was going to experiment and explore other tactics and formation that might not outrightly yeild positive result.
I was spot on in my preview of this match warning against the danger of under performance, or under estimating the Serbians.
We also presented that Serbia would die to win and they brought their A game.
I was also spot on informing Nigerians of a ‘burst’ outcome, if our midfield fail to take charge and control, and shred-off the challenge in the middle of the pack.
GR matchday-list for the occasion was telling bcos he threw the game open when he handed Captain’s Arm Band to Onazi, and named him in his starting 11.
Furthermore, GR gave Ahmed Musa a rare chance to prove himself a better man than Ighalo as Top 9.
Awaziem, Idowu, Ekong & Ebuehi were re-tested together. It was good experimentation, one you would not risk without a trial. Uzoho is still coming up.
Ubuehi must not aggravate his fragile health; his quality is not in doubt.
Ekong, Idowu & Awaziem are all of good quality. Why risk injury & all with the WC next door.
Now, Nigerians have seen the boys and everyone is entitled to an opinion, whether such opinions are technical, or unfounded and pedestrian. Popular or unpopular the media are dishing out all sorts of analyses.
I have read comments about the match and most of them are dry and sentimental.
This is not only a Nigerian problem, even in Argentina, La Albiceleste had succumbed 1- 6 to Spain, in Madrid, fans will take to the streets.
Portugal had also suffered a 0-3 defeat with CR7 in the mix. Some are calling for a sack.
Such is the extent fans could go.
Many of these so-called hardline followers (fans) are football illiterates & quacks.
They lack deep knowledge of the game and only believe their team must WIN in every match, even in mock games.
We need a lot of education on this.

A captain is a manager & coordinator of his team, also during play. It is critical to how a team performs. The team Captain combines his duties wit supervision of his colleagues. It is a dual function & not everyone can handle it.
Ordinarilly, the oldest team player should claim it but it must not be automatic if the player lacks the qualities to lead.
Onazi Ogenyi has failed again leading SE. Against South Africa, last year, and now Serbia.
So, GR knew why he switched the Band (C) from Troost-Ekong, CB to Onazi in 4 days.
Onazi lost direction again & failed to coordinate his midfield, he allowed the Serbians to dictate the Midfield rhythm and take the initiative. These lapses clearly have shown what level GR can commit to him..
A match is won and lost in the midfield department, a good Coach will tell u.
SE had no midfield play against the hardworking Serbians. Joel was lost, Ndidi suffered & Onazi was at sea, completely overwhelmed & confused. The duty & initiative to shred the Serbians was lost. It was a below par outing.
No feeds to out strikers. This was a show of shame. It was a disaster!
Ahmed Musa’s deficiency was clearly revealed without Iheanacho’s presence. Musa has by far past his best, just like Uwa Elderson Echiejele who watched from the bench. These are “Aged” players under illusion as boys.
We all know them; they can’t give what they don’t have.
Ighalo is fighting for a 2nd choice top 9 spot with Musa, but the man had failed himself again to take half chances, even the rear gift chance in the box, he frittered away.
Victor Moses & Iwobi showed commitment and their class even in the drab encounter.
The match served its purpose very well. Kudos to the technical Man, GR for using these matches to expose the deficiencies of our “Big Players”.
    Heads can now start rolling.
Nigerians must not be surprised to see NEW faces in the SE next invitation.
The clock is ticking fast and SE are getting set to fly.
Our striking role is our current major headache & concerns of fans.
We expect the Crew to source for proven goals-machine to be invited no matter the Division in which they play for quick assessment.

    Suggested Names:
    1) Cyriel Dessers
    2) Paul Unuachu
    3) Fernando Adi
    4) Obafemi Martins..

Critics speaking against seeing these eligible Nigerias get called up are either nursing a clandestine motive, or clearly know nothing about this game, and are enemies of SE & Nigeria.
There are more ‘battles’ ahead to be fought to hammer the team into good shape before the WC, and GR have proved very decisive with his Master stroke in Serbian Match by not showing his full hand but only his intent.
The ‘Oyinbo Man’ knows his starting 11 for the WC. Don’t be deceived.
SE will be the team to beat at the Mundial.
    I stand by them, 100%.

Hmmmmmm spot on Kingmaker! 3 gbosa for u abeg!!!!

  • @kingmaker, Waoo.. I can’t agree less with this submission. I believe the Coach is good to go with the super eagles. Our boys hold so much promise and the match against Serbia would teach us 1 or 2 lessons. True Ahmed is old already with 2 wives, who is fooling who? I think u are absolutely on point about onazi, he plays in a small league and lacka the composure requires to lead eagles. With Mikel around every little detail will be sorted out. These are test matches and not do or die matter.
Thanks for this thoughtful and insightful write up. NFF and Rohr must read this.
I stand with super eagles all the way.
    An exceptional piece indeed.

    • Kalu Samuel & Anderson Etisi playz far better than Moses Simon in Gent fc bt nobody callz them to the national team,Azubuike Okechukwu z jt an amazing player bt nobody talks abt him,Denis Bonaventure Z an amazing player 4 club Brugge we don’t invite them,Taiwo Awoniyi Fine finisher nobody cares to invite diz guyz….

Bro, @ kingmaker you are the King of analysis on Nigeria football. So brief yet detailed.
Yes! Super Eagles need fresh call up for top 9 challenge. NFF please take note.
Excellent! I am with Super Eagles 4 life.

  • Even the search isn’t over for d gaffer. He knows he still need fresh legs.
Bournemouth website confirmed it that rohr has asked ibe to confirm/ submit change of nationality….last week.
Whether he worth it or not, coach is trying and I’m sure he can’t be worse than Musa.

Kingmaker, you have spoken exactly my mind. I actually wanted us to lose the Serbia game. And our coach deliberately played to lose to Serbia. People don’t know that our coach is experienced and crafty. He is using the friendly matches to bamboozle our opponents. They will spy on us but he is going to make it “The more you look, the less you see for them”. I also expect us to lose one or even two of our other friendly games before the world cup. Not because we cannot win those matches but because losing will make the opponents in our world cup group to underate us. And it will be their greatest undoing.

    • Pablo9ja 3 years ago

@Wanogho u read my thinking. I am not too comfortable with all these crazy talks about how Eagles lost. U must be a crafty coach to get far at the world cup which is exactly what I think the gaffer is doing.. Agreed we will lose again in other test matches ahead of the games.
Argentina is in tumoil after their beating by Spain and the Media is in fits. Sampaoli risk a sack from now.

    Lovely piece. Thank you.

  • Ayphillydegreat 3 years ago

Maybe an Obafemi Martins of which I will take an Olarenwaju Kayode because he’s younger. Adi was called up before, he couldn’t displace Ighalo. I’ll prefer Sadiq Umar ahead of Desser who I’ve never seen play any competitive international football. Isaac Success can also play as a top striker and a recuperating Henry Onyekuru. These are players I already know their potentials. Not by just throwing up random names because you only watch them on YouTube. If you watch Musa and Ighalo highlights on YouTube you will think Messi and Ronaldo are not better than them. Elderson will be my preferred choice at left back at the Mundial proper. I’m not completely sold on Idowu yet, he seems to be limited in his progressions. Even Aina IMHO looks better with the cameo appearance when he came on in his place. He made two long throws into the box that I’ve only seen JayJay make those kind of throws back in the glory days. Joel Obi too was ok at those situations on few occasions against Poland. In a 3 man midfield going by current form I will choose Joel Obi or Oghenekaro Etebo ahead of Onazi, Ogu, Agu, Agbo and co. How on Earth Onazi was the vice captain of these team is beyond my imagination. Dude is 25 and he plays like a 40 year old. @ Tommy LMAO! Musa at 25 already have two wives. Na pepper rest ooo! What I observed that is conspicuously missing in these present SuperEagles is the intimidating presence of a Rachidi Yekini and a Daniel Amokachi. Of which a fit and focused Isaac Nassarra Success can at least solve part of that problem. LO BA TAN.

  • Analysis by the king absolutely on spot. These man GR has proven himself on several occasions to deliver when it mattered, y then d criticism after a loss to a desperate serbian side. Anyways, my submission, we still need onazi and Musa on d bench for their experience. Ndidi lately had not given his best compared to what he does at club level. And y is nobody talking about d creative aspect of d midfield which is obviously in shambles without Mikel. Even Mikel is no more a natural 10. Pls reasonable forumites let’s start a crusade for natural young and formidable creative midfielder to support Mikel cos without this, even if u bring d best midfielders they might not score goals. Thanks

  • Strikers rather

  • there is really no more time left, rather than crowd the team with many invitations I did prefer the coach calling players who are likely to fit in easily into the team philosophy, if Brown Ideye continues getting playing time with Malaga I feel he deserves a call up, same with Isaac Success and hoping onyekuru gets fit in time for the camping…Sadiq Umar could also get a chance if he continues with his form now. In midfield with Mikel and etebo back in the fold.Uzoho before these friendly game only saw himself as a squad member but knowing now that he has more responsibilities on his young shoulder I want to blive he will come to camp in may a better prepared man and I also trust GR and his lieutenants to always provide the needed assistance both psychologically and technically to him while at la Coruna. In all these friendlies has opened our eyes to a lot of things and we can only see improvement..i know many a times when the eagles rise up especially when they have been written off

Wow! this is good!! People that understand football is talking. Appreciate, Guys

  • Gideon. S 3 years ago

Looking at SE defense line, I think we lack more experience without the “Oyibo-wall” Efe Ambrose won’t be a bad idea on the bench, with what his doing in Scottish league at the moment, is not bad giving him a chance in next friendly. just that time is not on our side but I believe coach GR will get it right

  • ND Onu 3 years ago

The only problem this team has is goal keeper. Every other problem is manageable. I wish Onuachu had a chance but time has run out, the coach should get the best out of Ajayi as 3rd striker. I expected more from Uzoho but if Enyeama gets fit he should go to World Cup even as number 3 goalie/goalkeeper coach so that if we have a problem we can call on him.

Time is too late to start inviting too many new faces. Onazi may not be a great captain but he is still a very good midfielder. I won’t read too much into the Serbia loss. The pitch was not too good for any real assessment. I will judge this super eagles team against England in Wembley.
