By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
Ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, the Nigeria Football Federation have lined up international friendly matches for the Under-23 Eagles against their counterparts from Brazil and England.
According to NFF second vice President Shehu Dikko, the two games which have almost been tied up will come up during FIFA windows and are expected to serve as warm-up for the Samson Siasia-led Under-23 national team.
“We want to as usual give the team the adequate and the best preparation that will ensure that they go to Rio to compete very well and if possible win the gold. There are other friendly games we are discussing with some countries for the team that won AFCON U-23 in Senegal,” Dikko told Completesportsnigeria.com.
“The NFF will ensure that the Under-23 Eagles do not go to the Rio Olympics as mere participants but real contenders for the Olympic gold. We want to repeat the 1996 Atlanta Olympic feat of the Nwankwo Kanu-led squad.”
Dikko expressed joy at the performance of the team at winning the AFCON U-23 trophy in Senegal, adding that he expects massive improvement before the Rio Olympics.
He stated that winning the trophy with mostly home-based players shows that the Nigerian league is blessed with talents who can hold their own against the best anywhere.Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
