Super Eagles defender Elderson Echiejile has expressed delight following his club, AS Monaco’s qualification for the round of 16 of this season’s UEFA Champions League.
The Ligue 1 side defeated Zenit 2-0 at the St. Louis 11 Stadium to progress to the first knockout stage.
Reacting after the victory, Echiejile who was not part of the team that won against the Russian side, hailed the performance of his teammates.
He wrote on his twitter page: “Good result at home, the team kept it compact. Well done boys, happy to be through to the second round of the UEFA Champions League.”
The win sees AS Monaco top Group C with 11 points, ahead of Bayern Leverkusen who finished on 10 points.
The third spot went to Zenit who will now drop down to the Europa League which they won in 2008.
It would be recalled that Monaco made it to the final of the 2004 Champions League where they lost 3-0 to FC Porto.
