Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho was brought on late for Gael Clichy but did little to salvage anything for City, hardly having a touch as City got desperate.

The win was City’s first loss to French opposition after two wins and two draws.

Also it is the first time Pep Guardiola will fail to take his team beyond the round of 16 of the Champions League.

It was a game of two halves as Monaco totally bossed the first half and went 1-0 up on eight minutes through exciting youngster Kylian Mbappe, who tapped in Bernardo Silva’s low cross.

Monaco continued to dominate City and deservedly went 2-0 up in the 29th minute this time through Fabinho who slotted the ball past Willy Caballero following Benjamin Mendy’s superb cutback.

City were much better in the early part of the second half and should have scored in the 58th minute but Sergio Aguero’s attempt to pounce on Raheem Sterling’s cutback was blocked.

Aguero was presented with another big chance on 62 minutes following a brilliant run from Leroy Sane but the Argentine blazed over the bar from range.

City had two great chances in quick succession but Aguero and Sane failed to score.

City’s improved second half performance was eventually rewarded on 71 minutes as Sane blasted the ball into the roof of the net after after Danijel Subasic failed to properly parry Sterling’s low shot.

But in the 77th minute Monaco went 3-1 up thanks to a superb header by Bakayoko off a free-kick.

At the Vicente Calderon also on Wednesday night, Atletico Madrid advanced into the last eight after playing 0-0 against Bayer Leverkusen to go through 4-2 on aggregate.

It is the fourth straight time Atlético Madrid have progressed past the round of 16 (previously 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016) under Diego Simeone.

  • I have never seen a set of players who play a match of such importance aimlessly. The Nan City players looked like they were drugged. From the goalkeeper to all the players except Aguaro although he missed plenty chances to bury the game for Man City. They were just turning round their own half without propelling forward. Very negative way to approach a match you have 2 goal advantage. Senseless tiki-taka. Rubbish. Leicester is the EPL last man standing in the champions league. Leicester vs Monaco.
