Nigeria forward Anthony Nwakaeme scored in the 12th minute of Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s UEFA Champions League play-offs first leg 2-1 win against Maribor at the Yaakov Turner Toto Stadium in Israel on Wednesday night, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu was also in action in the game for Hapoel and both Nigerians played for 90 minutes.
Maribor did not list 28-year-old Nigerian Sunny Ogbemudia Omoregie for the game.
Marcos Tavares had put Maribor ahead in the 10th minute before Nwakaeme scored a scteamer from the edge of the Maribor ’18’ to level the score for the hosts. Nwakaeme’s goal was the talk of the night, wowing numerous pundits include former England and Barcelona striker Gary Lineker. Shir Tzedek made it 2-1 for Hapoel just before the half time break from the penalty spot.
At the Stadio San Paulo in Naples, Italian side Napoli defeated nine-man French Ligue 1 side, Nice, who were without the duo of Mario Balotelli and Wesley Sneijder, 2-0. Dries Mertens put the Serie A side ahead in the 13th minute and they doubled their lead in the 70th minute through Jorge Luiz (Jorginho) after Mertens was fouled in the penalty box.
In Greece, former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike was not listed in Olympiakos’ Champions League qualifier against Croatian side Rijeka at the at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki as the Greek champions lost 2-1.
Istanbul Basaksehir, the club of Togo international Emmanuel Adebayor, hosted Sevilla Wednesday at the Basaksehir Fati Terim Stadium, Turkey and it ended 2-1 in favour of the La Liga side side. Adebayor, who has his roots in Nigeria, played for 90 minutes.
Scottish giants Celtic thumped Astana 5-0 in the first leg of their play-off at Celtic Park to almost guarantee themselves a place in the Champions League group stages.
