UEFA Champions League Qualifying Preview: PSV Very Close To Reaching Group Stages

Dutch club won 3-2 away to BATE last week and now look to complete job on home soil

The qualifying rounds for the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s premier club competition, are all set to be concluded this coming Wednesday evening (29 August). And one club who will be confident of reaching the group stages of the continental competition is Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven, who recorded a vital away win in their first leg tie against BATE Borisov of Belarus.

Where should I be investing my money?

One thing we should expect is goals when PSV and BATE meet on Wednesday night. The first leg last week was a five-goal thriller which PSV edged 3-2, putting them firmly in the driving seat ahead of this return encounter on Wednesday evening.

And PSV come into this game in excellent form. Having won the Eredivisie title ahead of Ajax last season, they have made an excellent start to their title defence, winning their first three games and scoring eight goals in the process.

And the Dutch club come into this tie as the clear favourites to reach the group stages of the continental competition. Looking at a simple bet based solely on who will qualify, PSV are at just 1.020 to go through with BATE all the way out t 19.00 to turn this tie around, according to Oddsshark.

Looking only at this second leg clash, PSV remain the red hot favourites. The home side are at 1.33 to record another win in the Champions League, while BATE find themselves at 9.00 to record what would be a vital away win – a comfortable, 2-0 win for PSV is priced competitively at 6.50.

Red Bull and Red Star lock horns in close clash

One encounter which should be closer to call is that between Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg and Red Star Belgrade of Serbia. Red Bull are in fine form having won their first five league games of the new season and can come into this crucial cup clash brimming with confidence.

In addition, Red Bull have kept a clean sheet in six of their last seven UEFA games, and if they do so here then a single goal will be enough to see them through to the group stages. Red Star will be no pushovers, however, with the Serbian club undefeated in their last three UEFA outings.

Again, first looking at the betting to qualify over the two legs, it is Red Bull who come in as favourites at a price of 1.33. Red Star find themselves out at 3.25, and may well be worth backing at that price.

In terms of this second leg tie, Red Bull’s advantage is far clearercut. The Austrian side are at just 1.44 to pick up the win they need in front of their own fans, with Red Star out at 7.50 to win on the road –  2-0 win for Red Bull is priced at 6.00, meaning that a US$5 bet would lead to a US$30 pay out.

PAOK in strong position to upset Benfica

And finally, Greek club PAOK Salonika may well fancy their chances of upsetting the odds against Portuguese giants Benfica. PAOK managed to secure a 1-1 draw in Lisbon in the first leg last week and will now look to finish the job in style on home soil.

Benfica only managed a 1-1 draw in the Portuguese league with Sporting this past weekend, although they certainly had one eye on this continental cup tie. And having beaten Turkish giants Fenerbache in the previous rounds, they will be confident of repeating the trick here.

And it is Benfica who are the favourites to qualify over the two legs at 1.75. However, you could double your money if you think PAOK will make it through at a price of 2.00.

Benfica are also favourites in this second leg clash. The visitors are at 2.35 to get the win they need, with home side PAOK only slightly higher at 3.00.

Ultimately, Benfica’s greater technical class may well shine through, and a 2-1 win for the visitors is priced at 9.50, offering close to a ten-fold return on any investment. In addition, you could more than double your money by backing over 2.5 goals in the game at 2.10.

Champions League qualifying 2nd leg ties:

(1.44) Red Bull Salzburg x Red Star Belgrade (7.50); draw (4.20)

(3.00) PAOK x Benfica (2.35); draw (3.30)

(1.36) PSV x BATE (9.00); draw (4.50)
