Europe’s football governing body UEFA have charged Liverpool and AS Roma over crowd trouble during the first leg semi-final of their UEFA Champions League tie at Anfield.
UEFA opened up disciplinary proceedings against Liverpool for the setting off of fireworks and the throwing of objects before and during the match, the Mirror reported on Tuesday.
Roma, meanwhile, have also been charged with crowd disturbances ahead of the same game.
Violent scenes outside of Anfield marred the clash, which Liverpool won 5-2 and and eventually qualified for the final 7-6 on aggregate.
One Liverpool fan, Sean Cox, was left in a serious condition in hospital following some of the trouble outside of the stadium on April 24.
Police arrested two men, both from Rome and aged 20 and 29, on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident.
At the time, UEFA said they were ‘shocked by the incident’ but would await an official report before deciding on taking action.
UEFA will discuss possible sanctions for both teams on May 31.
