UEFA To Use VAR In Champions League Games Next Season

UEFA has confirmed that Video Assistant Referee, VAR, will be used in the Champions League next season.

VAR will also be used in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup and the 2020 European Championships.

VAR will be rolled out in the Europa League from 2020-21 and in the UEFA Nations League finals in 2021.

The VAR was used in the World Cup over the summer, largely successfully, but the Premier League opted against implementing it this term.

It has been used, however, in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in matches played at top-flight grounds.

“We’re confident that introducing VAR in August 2019 will give us enough time to put in place a robust system and to train match officials to ensure an efficient, successful implementation of VAR in UCL, the world’s flagship club competition.” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin told reporters.

The draw procedure for the European Qualifiers 2020 was also ratified, with 10 groups of five or six teams making up 20 finalists. The other four will qualify via the UEFA Nations League.
