Ugbade Backs Super Eagles To Shock The World In Russia

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:

Former Nigeria international defender Nduka Ugbade has said that the Super Eagles can go all the way to the final of the World Cup in Russia if the team show a high level of unity and commitment, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

“The present Super Eagles may not have world class players but they have youthfulness, energy, pace and commitment to make up and take the World Cup by storm going all the way. These boys are hungry for success and I believe that hunger will see them go far,” Ugbade, who captained the Golden Eaglets to the first FIFA U-17 World Cup title in 1985, told CSN.

“Honestly, I see this set of Eagles surpassing expectations in Russia if there is unity in the team and the players give it their all. The youthfulness, energy and speed of the Eagles will be their biggest assets in Russia.”

Ugbade, who also assisted Manu Garba as a coach to win the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2013, said coach Gernot Rohr faces selection dilemma in picking the right players who will do Nigeria proud in Russia, adding that Rohr must get his selection right to excel at the World Cup.

Ugbade also feels that the Super Eagles must play their hearts out to win their opening game against Croatia to make their qualification easy but a loss will make things very difficult to progress.

  • Nduka Ugbade, you would have set the record of the first Nigerian player to play at the World Cup in all 3 levels (under-17, U-21 and the senior World Cup) but injuries and a loss of form rubbed you of a place in the historic 1994 Super Eagles squad.

Still, you, Christopher Ohehen and Samuel Elijah hold a special place in my heart for orchestrating one of the greatest comebacks in the history of of world football in Saudi ’89.

Now known as the Miracle of Damman, this match even has its own dedicated page on Wikipedia (can you believe it)!

Trailing 4:0 to mighty USSR in the quarter-finals of the Under-21 Fifa World Cup on the 25th of February 1989, the hopes of the Flying Eagles of Nigeria making the semi-finals were dead and buried (seamingly!).

The Russian Coach then withdrew their star player, Oleg Salenko, to rest in preparation of the semi-finals!

With just 30 minutes to full time (in the presennce of 10,000 spectators)
a brace from Ohehen and 1 goal each from Elijah and Ugbade drew the game level with Nigeria winning on penalties, astonishing!

So, Mr Ugbade, you as a man of miracles, I will take your words very serious indeed!

Evrybody is jst anxious abt d final 22 man squad and am nt different neither bt sincerely speaking i tink gernot rohr shud rpeat wat westerholf did at usa 94′ by goin wt 20 or 21 players dat where part of d qualifiers wt him wt d exception of Efan Ekoku & Chidi Nwanu. D idea of hitting such a mundial wt bunch of new faces dnt always wrk well for us. At France 98′ we had peter rufai & Kanu coming 4us wt Akpoborie nt in d squad it backfired 4us. Korea/Japan 2002 wil had lots of new faces like Ogbeche, Opabunmi, James Obiorah, Efe Sodje etc it wz a disaster. Even at our last mundial d likes of Uchebo, Nwafor had no biz dey. The main tin gernot rohr shud b tinkin is hvin nt only d main eleven bt also hvin an xtra eleven dat he can call upon and inject in2 d main eleven, that’s d main reason he shud stick wt d same players he used during d qualifiers cos he kws dem & dem d players kws his pattern play. As for my own 23 i wil snd mine wen i see his 35 man squad.

    uzoho in front of goal

    oyinbo wall as back up
shehu and idowu as wing backs

    musa and moses as wingers
    and ighalo as no 9

    ezenwa in goal
    and Aina as left back
then ndidi in place of musa

  • mistake
    ndidi in place of onazi

  • 1 Nwakeme, will not make the cut off.
2 Between Kayode and Onyekuru Henry, only one person might go.
3 Joel Obi will make it somehow.

    My 23 plus 2 standby:
    GK: UZOHO, Ezenwa, Akpeyi

DEF: EKON, BALOGUN, SHEHU,Idowu, Ebuehi, Aina / Echejile, Omeruo, Awaziem.

Standby: Junior Ajayi / Henry Onyekuru
Subject to injuries and full recoveries.
    No surprises, at all.
