By James Agberebi:
USA women's football team's coach Jill Ellis has praised her players for their performance in their 1-0 win against Nigeria at the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Abby Wambach's 45th minute strike sent the USA through to the second round and saw them finish as group winners.
Speaking after the match, Ellis hailed the Nigerian players for putting up a spirited effort despite the loss.
She told FIFA.com: “Nigeria gave us a good fight, as expected. They’re a dangerous team. I’m happy with the way we played both with and without the ball. "We can attack with confidence if we have a good backline.
"It’s a shame we only scored one goal but we’re very happy to finish top of a difficult group. Investments in women’s football are constantly increasing worldwide, so I think it’s right to talk of an evolution. In terms of tactics, this is the best tournament I’ve ever seen.”Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
