Utaka Backs Siasia, Amuneke To Deliver; Picks Mikel As Eagles Key Man Vs Egypt

Former Super Eagles forward John Chukwudi Utaka, has given his backing to the appointment of Samson Siasia as the interim coach of the Nigerian national team, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Utaka who once played for Egyptian sides; Ismaily and Arab Contractors, spoke to Egyptian top football website, Kingfut, on next week's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, to be followed by the return leg in Alexandria four days later.

“It’s a good choice (selection of Siasia and Amunike. They will do very well,” Utaka told KingFut.

On the invitation and subsequent selection of players by Siasia for the crucial games after extending invitations to 42 players for the national team camp, Utaka opines the decision of the chief coach, Siasia, will spur the invited players to redouble their efforts.

“I think whoever the coach picked will be more than ready for the match at hand. It is difficult to say, but it is up to the coach to assemble his starting 11."

Mohamed Salah has been touted as Egypt’s star man ahead of the crucial encounter against Egypt in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and Utaka agrees that the AS Roma forward will be the key man for the Pharaohs.

“Mohamed Salah will because he is quick and very dangerous on counter attacks.

“We have quick players in the attack as well, but I think Obi Mikel will be the key to Nigeria’s play because he knows his midfield duties."

Despite choosing Salah as Egypt’s dynamo, Utaka revealed his admiration for two other players from the squad.

“Ahmed Fathy and Amr Gamal have been very impressive,” the former Portsmouth winger stressed.

Eagles coach Samson Siasia earlier this week revealed he could hand national team opportunities to Nigerian duo of Stanley Ohawuchi who plays for Wadi Degla and Moruf Yusuf of Zamalek, and Utaka believes the duo are good enough for the Super Eagles.

“Yes, I do know them. They’re good players and they do have a chance to represent Nigeria,” the former Nigerian star who was one of the best players of the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia concluded.
