Uzoho Concedes 5 Goals In Elche’s Loss; Azeez Benched

By Johnny Edward:

Elche’s Nigerian shot stopper Francis Uzoho conceded five goals against Cadiz who completed a stunning 5-1 victory in Sunday’s Spanish Segunda league clash reports

The Nigerian international who had kept two clean sheets in the League prior to Sunday’s defeat was beaten five times in the second half of the encounter.

Interestingly, the 20  year old, Uzoho conceded four goals in 12  second half minutes.

Sory Kaba had shot the visitors, Elche into the lead in the ninth minute but goals from Roberto Correa, Dejan Lekic, Jose Mari (pen.), Salva Sanchez, and Manuel Vallejo handed Uzoho’s team their fourth defeat of the season.

Elche are now 14th with 14 points from 12 games while Cadiz who recorded a remarkable win are 13th in the table but with a superior goal difference to Uzoho’s team.

Uzoho and his Elche’s teammates will be looking to bounce back from the shambolic defeat when they hos Las Palmas in their next league game on Saturday.

Uzoho, currently on a season loan deal from Deportivo de La Coruna has been preferred in goal ahead of the veteran goalkeeper José Juan since he returned from international duty this month.

At the Nou Municipal de Cornella stadium, Ramon Azeez was an unused substitute for Lugo in their goalless draw away at Reus.

Azeez, has made five appearances in all competition this season for Lugo.

Lugo are 15th in the table with 13 points from 12 games.

While Uzoho has been called up for this month’s 2019 Africa Cup Of Nations qualifier against South Africa in Johanesburg, Azeez has been overlooked.

  • If the South Africans see this, it will certainly boost their confidence. 4 goals in 12 minutes!?? And a total of 5 in 45 minutes? Are you kidding me? The opposing team strikers probably saw his weak spots and exploited it in quick successions.

No sentiments, the goalkeeping department is still our greatest concern (along with the No9 shirt) going to Afcon 2019. Uzoho blocks well, but the sharp and flexible reflexes reminiscent of Enyeama and Rufai of the late 80s? He’s still very raw there. It’s sad we lost an EPL goalkeeper to Leukemia (Carl Ikeme). Perhaps it’s time to once again start looking at the EPL or the English championship for goalkeepers with Nigerian roots. Lol. Heard of one Osigwe.

  • Five yellow card in d second half by elche players . Intimidated dem . I watch d game at the stadium. Referee want the opponent to win .

Sadly very humiliating indeed. For the fact he conceded in quick succession within 12 mins makes it even worse.
Uzoho has impressed in his first and second auditions and needs to carry on with that achievement to cement his place as the first choice at Elche but this heavy lose came too soon and may bring to a halt his fine run so far.
I hope the gaffer at Elche will encourage this growing young glovesman by ensuring he gets more game time to improve and correct his lapses.
Though a goalkeeper is as good as his defence.Sometimes they are not to be blamed by a heavy lose because even the very best can concede just like our young goalkeeper did.
I wish Uzoho all the best fortunes at Elche.
    God bless Nigeria!

I just laugh whenever a team looses and the next action is pointing fingers to the Goal keeper. What happen to the remaining 10 outfield player? The Defence that were supposed to protect the Keeper? Or Was Uzoho playing 1 Vs 11? Abeg No one should start calling Uzoho bad names or tagging him as a Bad goal keeper. What happened to the Golden Glove winner Thiabut Courtois last week? Didn’t he concede exact scoreline? Does that now mean that Courtois is a Bad keeper and that Belgium’s opponent will now be happy to hear the news cuz they think he’s not a good goalie? Kudos to Uzoho for pinning down a No.1 spot at Spain.

Eish….What a meltdown. Swallowing 4 in 12 minutes and 5 in 45 minutes after not conceeding in 225 minutes previously. Uncle Francis….as we used to say back in the days after a heavy defeat…”lo momi le”……just go home and wash it down with 2 or 3 glasses of water. lolz. After those 2 previous stellar performances, i still back you to return next week back and better.

    • Chima E Samuels 2 months ago

The same you will say people are hating on a player when they say the truth regardless on match results. I have always knows you to be a green snake and always changing the tune when exposed my advice for you always follow the truth

      • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

hahahahah……You and your comprehension problems….how does… “After those 2 previous stellar performances, i still back you to return next week back and better”…… amount to changing tune. My support for Uzoho is still as rock solid as ever. If you like…you and your preferd candidates can hit your heads on olumo rock….Francis remain our no1 goalie going forward. At least till a fine young goalkeeper emerges who can give him a good run for his money. You are the green snake that comes here to hurl insults upon insults on our players wen they are not doing well and comeback to tell us you werent hating on them but rather encouraging them so that they will get better. How on earth does insults and vulgar verbal abuses amount to encouragements..? The same you who downplayed and watered down ighalo’s goals against libya claiming they were tap ins and all that will come here in another fell swoop to praise Isaac success to high heavens to a similar tap in for his league goal 1st goal in 2 years. I predicted you will crawl out of your hole the moment uzoho has a bad day in office and you didnt disappoint me…..Lolz

        • Chima E Samuels 2 months ago

Don’t worry i’m on the watch for you. As for me people know it that I say it as it comes and I stick to my word with a view that the player in question amends is mistakes before he wins back our trust.

          • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

Yea…by hurling insults upon insults at the player. We know you…you sure say it as it is with both sides of ur mouth….Ighalo taps in a goal…and its bullshit….but Isaac success taps in a goal and you sing his praises to the highest heavens….yes we know you..!

Lets those who dare raise his mouth against this young Nigerian Uzoho, tell us any goal keeper better than him not only in Nigeria but the whole of Africa right now ????. Tell us. We thrashed Cameroon 4 zero. We thrashed Libya 4 zero. Did the soccer Management of these Countries bashed/changed their goal keepers because of these thrashings they received from the Nigerians ?. Come on.

Folks, Uzoho is the best guy we have and his is doing well for Club & Country. He is 20 and still growing. Please give him your fullest support as he matches on. Francis Uzoho will reach his natural pick at 25 possibly at 26 and our Super Eagle will be at the top of the World and our Uzoho will be there with us.

  • Genot Rohr has shown so much faith in Francis Uzoho at the expense of our decent goalkeepers in the land. I think Rohr should creste a level playing field for others keepers.
Rohr is not being fair to othe. Goal tenders.

    • Decent keepers in the land……

The league is not functioning right now. They are all match rusty. The only football being played right now is first division football. Aiyeo cup saw players playing a maximum of 8 matches since May. CAF competition gave an extra 4 matches in that time.

I wouldn’t change our number one keeper because he had a bad day at the office, I would, however, agree that Afelokhai should have replaced Ezenwa as number two to challenge Uzoho.

Also noteworthy is, other challengers;Osigwe in Switzerland and Nwolokor in Croatia were relegated to their club benches this week. So foreign challenges are waning too.

Which other keepers playing anywhere have the talent and opportunity to wrestle the number one spot from him?

      • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

They want us to go back to dele aiyenugba and austin ajide…and maybe ike shorunmu.

      • that they didnt play their last club’s last games doesnt reduce their opportunities..osigwe has manned the post 10 times this season and therefore can be given a look in

  • Hmm, it is easy to read too much into the 5 goals conceded by Uzoho today, however I will associate myself with the comments of my dear brothers Fidelenny and Kel: Rohr’s immutable faith in Uzoho and Super Eagles goalkeeping department is suspect in the short-term.
Uzoho carries himself with admirably courage and dignity in Super Eagles colours but, the young man is still work-in-progress as the 5 goals he conceded today shows:
#Goal One: Anticipation, timing, reflexes found wanting.
#Goal Two: Decision making, experience, sense of direction, positioning, anticipation all found wanting.
#Goal Three: He actually guessed right but couldn’t keep out the ball.
#Goal Four: starting position, speed, reflexes, timing, vision, anticipation, agility and dive were all found wanting.
#Goal Five: Decision making, timing, presence of mind, vision were found wanting.
I think Uzoho can only get better and he will. He was exposed by his defence today which in turn exposed his own weaknesses.
I was watching a documentary of boxer Suger Ray Leonard and the match he lost against Roberto Duran. Leonard spent hours reviewing the match afterwards to see where he got it wrong. He realised all his mistakes.
During the re-match, in the closing seconds of the eighth round, Duran turned his back to Leonard and quit, saying to the referee, “No Mas” (English: “No more”). Leonard was the winner by a technical knockout.
This is just one-of-those-things for Uzoho. Hopefully he can review the match, see where he went wrong, work with his trainers to make him the quality world class goalkeeper that he has it in him to become.

    • Chima E Samuels 2 months ago

My question remains the same are we going to keep grooming him with upcoming important matches at our own risk until he matures?

      • Chima E Samuels 2 months ago

Because the last time a fellow Goalkeeper came on here to admit that Uzoho was not ready I know how Drey criticized that guy and he didn’t return again. If the truth are faced with bad mouth then we will keep going aback!

        • Yes @Chima E. Samuels, I remember the guy that said he was a professional goalkeeper too commenting on this forum. Sad he left. I really wanted to get his detailed insight on Uzoho from a technical or professional point of view and I asked him. But he never replied. Let’s hope Uzoho comes good soon and this is just a temporary blip. I guess if the goals let-ins were against Barcelona, Athletico, or any of the La Liga or EPL teams, I may not really bother.

        • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

Pls kindly go and copy that post and the so-called critiques for all to see….!!!

          • Chima E Samuels 2 months ago

Drey you are the problem on this forum causing confusion helter scatter with your rumors et a al

          • Chima E Samuels 2 months ago

Don’t worry you will go and find the guys comment at mongo park after your outrage.

          • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

Hahahaha….rumors indeed. I dont even think you understand what a ‘rumour’ is

    • Dr. Drey 2 months ago

Hahahahah…they have finally found their voices….they know themselves…! Francis Uzoho has played 6 “important” matches so far. 3 in russia and 3 in the afcon qualifiers. We have won 4 and lost two..he conceeded 6 goals and kept 3 clean sheets. I dont understand what naysayers mean by “at our own risk”. So far with francis in goal, we have moved from 3rd in our afcon group to 1st and we have mathematically qualified for the AFCON for the 1st time in 5 years. They should tell us if it Nigeria that is at risk with francis uzoho as our goalkeepr or they and their prefered candidate that is at risk with francis’s continued presence in the SE. Where was the so-called professional goalkeeper when francis was making point blank saves in his last 3 matches for his club..??? They will tell us which goalkeeper in the world is the “finished” prodduct at the moment that never concedes goals. Even the best in the last worldcup still shipped in 5 just last week. They should go and bring their Lev Yashin that will bounce Uzoho from the eagles….but till then…let their beeff continue to purge them in their bellies

      • Dr Drey, don’t mind them. They forgot that Enyimba lost 6-1 to Ismaili of Egypt in 2003 with a 20 year old Enyeama in goal but did it stop Enyeama from being top class eventually. These things happen. From the highlights Elche’s defending on the goals were total non-existent. Uzoho faced at least 2 free (uncontested) headers and a penalty. Where were the defenders? A goal keeper can only do so much. What happened to world class Courtois who was voted the best goal keeper at the 2018 World Cup a week ago? He conceeded 5 goals to Barcelona without Messi. People talk about Ezenwa, what happened at the Wafu Cup Final last year?

So who are the alternatives? Who do we have who is currently better? The sooner we realise that the standard of the Nigerian league is very low the earlier we face reality. Our local league goal keepers are not exposed enough and are not developed well like the players in general. We have to face the truth.

Another bad day in the office for the poor lad. I wish he recovers psychologically as soon as possible. I think, he needs strong competition in the eagles to keep him on his toes. He really needs to improve as a matter of fact.

  • Chima E Samuels 2 months ago

Please read link thank God history remains and see what they said because today their tune has changed all the green snakes in the house!

  • Meanwhile, Bafana has named their squad and recalled the formerly suspended Serero. See below:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Ronwen Williams (SuperSport United), Darren Keet (Bidvest Wits).

Defenders: Ramahlwe Mphahlele (Kaizer Chiefs), Motjeka Madisha (Sundowns), Siyanda Xulu (Maritzburg), Thulani Hlatshwayo (Wits), Innocent Maela (Pirates), S’fiso Hlanti(Wits), Buhle Mkhwanazi (Wits) Thamsanqa Mkhize (CT City).

Midfielders: Vincent Pule (Pirates), Lebohang Maboe (Sundowns), Hlompho Kekana (Sundowns), Fortune Makaringe (Maritzburg), Teboho Mokoena (SuperSport), Tiyani Mabunda (Sundowns), Thulani Serero (Vitesse), Thembinkosi Lorch (Pirates).

Strikers: Lebo Mothiba (Strasbourg), Percy Tau (Royal Union), Dino Ndlovu (Zhejiang), Themba Zwane (Mamelodi Sundowns).

    • This Baxter is too boastful and Nigeria really needs to shut him up for good with a loud win! Hear him after revealing his squad for the game:

“I must admit this makes the upcoming clash all the more interesting. Remember we beat them 2-0 in the first leg in their backyard, so they will come here trying to avenge that. On the other hand we want to regain the top spot which we relinquished with the draw away to Seychelles. The good thing is that qualification is still in our hands.”

  • Though…Uzoho needs another face/Goal keeper as a rival to keep him on his toes..that I agree. But if the so called rivals still remain Akpeyi and Ezenwa then let him remain…if he likes let him concede 20 goals.
Peter Cech has improved this season ‘cos of pressure from Leno.

  • …another Golie,  not the same ospina and Matinez but New face, Leno.

    • Ayphillydegreat 2 months ago

Did you say Peter Cech just improved because of Leno? I bet you’re probably just watching Cech for the first time this season. You must never have watched him all those years he was at Chelsea winning virtually everything there is. How can you say a 36 year old goalkeeper One of the greatest goalkeepers of all time is just improving because of Leno? You gotta be kidding me.

By the way it’s not as if the likes of Aiyenugba, Ejide, weren’t good goalkeepers. Enyeama was just on another level. Even when Ikeme showed up if Enyeama hadn’t called it quit on his international career he will still be our first choice up until at least Russia.

  • Another example is Enyeama who rules for many years because he had no real competitor.
With Ejide and Aiyenugba and later Agbim and this Akpeyi.
We believe he is indispensable until Ikeme shows up.

  • Ayphillydegreat 2 months ago

As for Nigeria. We do not have a better goalkeeper than Francis Odinaka Uzoho at the moment. He has played 3 important matches at the WorldCup and 3 important matches in AFCON qualifiers. Won 4 lost 2 kept 3 clean sheets. I have no idea what other important matches we have except for the AFCON proper. At only 20 he has already gained significant experience. I’m sure he will be Nigeria’s first choice goalie for the next 15 years unless another exceptionally talented goalkeeper shows up.
