Second half goals from Dele Alli, Toby Alderwereld and Erik Lamela sealed the win for the title-chasing London side.

In his post-match reaction, Van Gaal posited that Martial’s miss was the turning point in the game.

“Until the first goal we were at least the equal team,” Van Gaal said.

“The better chance was for us with Anthony Martial, a big chance. We give the first goal away, a miscommunication and then in five minutes we were out of the game.

“The second goal is a set play and our best header (Rojo) loses the duel. It was fantastic header from Alderweireld. It cannot happen. But it happened.”

Van also explained why he decided to play substitute Ashley Young as a strike.

“Why did Ashley Young go up front? I want more running in behind because in the first half we didn’t have an attacking point. That was the reason.”
