Manchester United Louis van Gaal has confirmed that winger Ashley Young will be out with a groin injury and is set for an operation.
The 30-year-old was forced off during United’s 1-0 Barclays Premier League win at Liverpool on Sunday, and the club have now described the injury as ‘severe’.
Van Gaal confirmed the serious injury to the England in his Friday’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Southampton.
“Ashley Young has a severe groin injury, it shall be operated on, so he’s for a long time gone,” Van Gaal told MUTV.
Young has been in impressive form for the Red Devils in recent weeks, despite playing in a left-back role.
Van Gaal had positive news with regards to the fitness of Matteo Darmian, but the Dutchman remains keen to invest in reinforcements in the transfer window.
“When you see our luck with the full-backs this season – only Darmian is fit. I need full-backs.
“I have started with Valencia, Shaw, Rojo, Darmian and Young, sometimes, and they are all injured – only Darmian is now back.
“We are looking for a level but clubs don’t want to sell. It is difficult. You think it is so easy.
“I used youngsters a lot of times,” Van Gaal added.
“[Cameron] Borthwick-Jackson and [Guillermo] Varela are doing great but the level at United is high.
“It is very difficult for youngsters to do that every week. That is why we have to look for reinforcements. We are looking but the clubs don’t want to sell. Everybody thinks it is easy but it is not so.”
