Vergne Makes F1 Approach Claim

Jean-Eric Vergne claims he has had an offer to return to Formula 1 for the 2019 season but would not reveal the identity of the team. The 28-year-old Frenchman spent two years with Toro Rosso and then moved on to Ferrari as a test driver before opting to leave F1 in 2015.

Vergne moved into Formula E and won the 2017-18 title with Techeetah to put himself firmly back on the map in motorsport.

He also featured in G-Drive Racing’s dominant LMP2 class win at the Le Mans 24 Hours earlier this year and, while the team was later disqualified, Vergne’s strong performance has further enhanced his reputation with F1 sides clearly keeping tabs on him.

“It’s funny how the world of motorsport changes,” Vergne told Crash.net.
“When you change your state of mind, when you change a little bit how you work, you see the results straight away.

“You see it in the results, and you see it in how people look at you and how they speak to you. When you start representing a brand what you are, it changes a lot of things.

“Three years ago, I don’t think anybody would have called me from F1 and said: ‘Hey, do you have a contract for next season?’ So it’s great.”

Vergne would not be drawn on which team made the offer, but he appears interested in making a return to F1, especially if the sport becomes more competitive.

He added: “It’s something that would interest me, to have another new, big challenge. This time, I think I have all the tools at my disposal to do a good job in F1.”
