Verstappen Learned Lessons From Monaco

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner feels a disastrous weekend in Monaco helped turn around Max Verstappen’s season.

Verstappen began the 2018 campaign with high hopes but failed to finish two of the first six grands prix and was involved in incidents in all of them.

He received criticism from both the media and a few fellow drivers, who felt his reckless driving was dangerous for all concerned.

It all came to a head in the principality as the young Dutchman blew his chances of a high place on the grid by crashing into the barriers during practice, with mechanics unable to fix his car in time for qualifying.

Verstappen finished ninth from the back of the grid and has been much more successful since, winning in Austria while recording another four podium finishes.

Horner has praised the way the youngster has fought back from adversity and confessed that the Monaco experience was a real jolt for the 21-year-old.

“That hurt him quite badly because he’s obviously extremely quick in Monaco – right up until the point he crashed,” he told Sky Sports.

“That was a tough outcome for him and since that point he has driven incredibly well.”
