Fans at the Akure Township Stadium turned against their side on Sunday following a row between Sunshine Stars of Akure supporters and club chairman Akin Akinbola, reports completesportsnigeria.com.
Completesportsnigeria.com reliably gathered from one of the supporters of the Akure Gunners who pleaded anonymity that some disgruntled supporters manhandled the club’s technical director, Henry Abiodun, during their last home game against Heartland, citing his interfreence in team selection for their action.
The crisis started on Sunday during Sunshine’s 3-2 defeat to Nasarawa United (pictured celebrating one of their goals) when Akinbobola ordered the arrest of the supporters, which was met with stiff resistance by their colleagues in the crowd.
Play was stopped for close to 15 minutes afterwards as fans started throwing stones into the pitch leaving journalists and the players scampering for safety.
The few security operatives at the stadium failed to interfere in the melee as they stayed on the sidelines with players and officials of both teams.
Normalcy however resumed after some officials of the club interfered in the matter.
The home fans afterwards turned against their team and the distractions got into the players who struggled for the remaining part of the game which culminated in their first home loss of the campaign.
The situation escalated further at the end of the game with fans and journalist scampering for safety as the disgruntled supporters further expressed their anger.
Nasarawa United players and officials however received a huge applause from the home fans on their way out of the stadium.
