Matt Wallace leads the DP World Tour Championship by one shot at the halfway stage after carding a flawless 65 on Friday. The Englishman is seeking his fourth win of the season on the European Tour and produced a joint-low round of the day at the Jeremiah Golf Estates to take sole possession of top spot at the halfway stage.
Wallace was out of the blocks quickly with back-to-back birdies, making two further gains on the front nine as he made the turn in 32. Three more birdies on the back nine saw him move to 11 under for the season-finale event.
“That’s up there with one of the best this year,” he told the European Tour website. “I’m playing with freedom now and trying to place as high as I possibly can come the back nine holes on Sunday and then that’s when I normally will try and kick in and want to win a tournament, depending on where I am.
“I’ve been in this situation before, just not in this sort of tournament. The best players are out there in the world and I just want to compete and see where my game is at against them.”
A group of three players are a shot behind Wallace with Danny Willett, Jordan Smith and Adrian Otaegui all firmly in contention heading into the weekend.
Patrick Reed sits two off the pace after after a six-under 66, while Rory McIlroy, a two-time DP World Tour Championship winner is a further stroke back in a share of eighth.
Joining the Northern Irishman on the same mark is Tommy Fleetwood, who needs to win this week’s event to retain his Race To Dubai crown and gave himself a chance with five-under 67.
