Wawrinka Upbeat And Targeting Strong Finish

Stan Wawrinka feels he is close to getting back to his best after his injury woes and is hoping to end 2018 strongly. The three-time Grand Slam champion missed the latter half of last year with a knee injury before making a return in February.

The Swiss star then suffered a setback, resulting in a further three months on the sidelines before making a second comeback in May.

Wawrinka dropped out of the world’s top 250 but he is now back in the top 100 after reaching the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters and the third round of the US Open.

The 33-year-old former world number three admits he is yet to hit top form but believes he is improving and wants to end the year strongly.

“I think in general I’m playing really well,” Wawrinka told the ATP website. “I think it’s getting there. I think I need to keep being patient, keep working really hard and well outside the matches because I know I need to keep doing the right things for the end of the year, try to gain some confidence and we’ll see what happens.”

He added: “I want to finish a good year and get a chance to do the right preparation, right off-season, push myself to be 100 per cent ready for the beginning of [next] year and then we’ll see.”
