First half goals from Marcus Rashford – from the penalty spot – and Anthony Martial, saw United go into the break 2-0 up.

Substitute Nicolas Otamendi reduced the deficit late in the game but United held on to claim all three points.

Speaking after the defeat to United, Walker who was in action for City however said it will be difficult to stop Liverpool.

“It’s going to be difficult, we all know that, Liverpool are on fire. They are getting wins and we are not, it’s as simple as that. So we will keep fighting till the end that’s all I can say now.

” I can’t say we can catch them because it’s a big gap. We will fight till the end until it is mathematically over, that’s when we will give up.”

Saturday’s defeat saw City occupy the third position on 32 points, and are now 14 points behind leaders Liverpool.
