Arsene Wenger has heaped plaudits on Hull City caretaker coach Mike Phelan for his impressive start to the new season with the Tigers.

Wenger said Phelan has given Hull some stability which has seen the Tigers chalk up seven points from their opening four fixtures in what has been an impressive start to the new season.

"He is doing very well, he has worked in big clubs and in big competitions," Wenger said during his press conference on Friday.

"He’s a real football man who has given some stability to Hull."

Wenger played down reports that Arsenal have opened contract talks with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil while stating that injured Per Mertesacker whose contract runs out next summer could be offered a new one-year deal.

"We have not dealt with that situation (contract talks with Ozil and Alexis). He (Mertesacker) has to come back [from injury].

"We go year by year with Per."

He also thinks Hector Bellerin's challenge against Usain Bolt for a race is rather ambitious.

"It’s a bit ambitious, I think he’s still too quick for Hector."

With Aaron Ramsey and Gabriel out of contention for the trip to the KCOM Stadium on Saturday, the Frenchman hinted that Theo Walcott could be back in the squad for the game against Hull City with Petr Cech also back in goal.

"Walcott could be back in the squad. He will be assessed. Ramsey is still out. Gabriel is back in training. He might play on Tuesday.

"Cech will be back.

"No. Olivier Giroud has a knock on Tuesday night, I have to check if he is alright.

"He has been a bit behind fitness wise. He’s slowly getting there."

Wenger also believes summer signing Granit Xhaka is gradually adapting to the rigours of the English Premier League.

"Look, In one or two occasions [he struggled]. I think he has adapted quite well. His physical strength and power allows him to pretend to play straight away.

"He is highly focused. Elneny as well, both of them are focused and top top quality."

"Every week he’s stronger and better. I think he will play a big part this season.

"He has the stature, the power, the strength.

"For many players it took some time to get into the team, it happens.”

He adds: “I prefer him as a box-to-box player. He has the engine to have an impact with his runs."
