Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that he is delighted his team finished as Group A winners in the UEFA Champions League thanks to Ludogorets who held Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-2 draw in France on Tuesday night.
Arsenal finished top of the group on 14 points, two points ahead of PSG, following their 4-1 away win against Basel in Switzerland on Tuesday.
A hat-trick from summer signing Lucas Perez and a goal from Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi secured the comfortable win for Arsenal.
It was the first time Arsenal will end a Champions League group stage as winners since the 2011/2012 season.
“I thought Ludugorets were a good side – they made a great result that helps us top the group, which was what we wanted,” Wenger said in his post-match press conference.
“We did the job in a convincing way, we were mobile and overall had a committed performance.
“It is difficult to know but you feel a bit less guilty if you have a bad draw if first than second – we have done our job and let’s see what happens.”
Wenger reserved special praise for Perez for his hat-trick heroics.
“I think Perez took advantage of the fact we created good chances – he is a goalscorer you know, he has shown tonight he has a good smell for the goal.”
