Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has praised Chuba Akpom’s late strike which gave the Gunners a 2-1 victory over the MLS All-Stars in San Jose on Thursday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Wenger was pleased that Akpom’s winner saved his side from going into a penalty shootout with scores level at 1-1 with three minutes left to play.
“I didn’t want to go to penalties,” Wenger told the Arsenal’s official website.
“We play to win, and even in pre-season we want to accumulate confidence and think that we can keep going. Overall I think we scored a very good goal [to win it].”
Nigerian striker Akpom, who was named man of the match, poked in Nacho Monreal’s low cross in the 87th minute to hand Arsenal their first pre-season win in two games.
Arsenal nemesis Didier Drogba had equalised for the MLS All-Stars.
The Gunners drew 1-1 against Lens in their first pre-season game.
Arsenal will complete their US tour with a game against Mexican club Chivas on Sunday in Los Angeles.
