Arsene Wenger was left beaming as Arsenal romped to a ‘faultless’ 5-0 win over Premier League strugglers Aston Villa.
The win also sparked the return to form of German international Mesut Ozil who marked his first start in four months with a goal.
The midfielder also turned provider as he set up Olivier Giroud’s 8th-minute opener with a deft flick. Wenger told Sky Sports: “You cannot fault anyone’s performance. Mesut [Ozil] did well. It takes a while to get that sharpness back.
“We had a rigorous attitude defensively. Even at 4-0, 5-0 up people were willing to work back. We want to play collectively and offensively to the end.”
The Gunners’ boss was also impressed with his side’s defensive showing and praised their patience and persistence.
He said: “It was positive because we kept a clean sheet. We know we can score goals. We needed to be patient because they tried to stop us going forward. “With time going on we had a chance to play through their lines and that made the difference.”
The win saw Arsenal leap-frog their north London rivals Tottenham into fifth place, whilst the result spelled dark times for Aston Villa, who are without a Premier League goal now for 10 hours.
Wenger added: “You could see that mentally for Villa the second goal was a big blow to them. They are in a difficult position.
