Anglo Nigeria forward, Chuba Akpom, might be in line for an extended run in the Arsenal first team after being mentioned by Arsene Wenger as an option in the attack.
Wenger, speaking to French media on his transfer plans ruled out further signing in the attack after Alexis Sanchez capture and mentioned Akpom as one to watch out for.
“As for now, we’re done with attackers, aside Giroud and Sanchez, we have Joel who can play centrally and wide on the wings,” Wenger stated.
“Other options, Sanogo has grown in leaps and bounds from last season and Akpom is knocking on the first team door with both hands.”
So far Akpom has participated in the Gunners’ pre-season training and tormented the backline of Boreham Wood on Saturday, as they ran out 2-0 winners.
Last season he featured intermittently for the Arsenal first team sitting on the bench in the Champions League, playing once in the Premier League and scored in a penalty shootout victory over West Brom in the Capital One Cup.
Other Nigerian-born stars in the Arsenal fold are Semi Ajayi and John Iwobi.
Chuks Aneke, whom former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia exclusively told Completesportsnigeria.com that he was on the verge of being handed an international debut for Nigeria before his (Siasia) eventual sack by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has been released by the current English FA Cup winners after the expiration of his contract.
