Wenger Ready For Europa, Expects Tough United Clash; Wants Peace With Mourinho

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he does not mind playing in the Europa League next season.

Arsenal could end up playing in Europe's second-tier club competition next season as they are currently sixth in the Premier League table and could miss fourth place.

The last time Arsenal played in the Europa League (formerly the UEFA Cup) was in the 1999/2000 season when they lost 4-1 on penalties to Galatasaray in the final.

“I take every competition seriously and the only thing I did over the years was to use the League Cup to give chances to young players," Wenger said on Thursday in his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday'sPremier League clash against Manchester United.

“The Europa League, they decided that to give the chance for it to be taken seriously again because most of the big clubs didn’t play with strong teams so to make it more attractive they opened the door to quality.

“You still have to go through the qualifiers so that was a good incentive to get the best teams again and to be motivated. But if you look at the teams who won it recently it has always been teams who were kicked out of the group stage but this year it could be Man United, who started the competition.”

Wenger stated that he expects a very tough game while dismissing talks of facing a weak United side.

“They have a massive squad with quality players," he added. "We will not speculate on any weakness of United. Whoever they play they will be strong.

“I don’t know (on whether United will be defensive). They will certainly try to be defensively solid but they will try to win the game as well.

“They have to win the game to try and be in the top four.”

The French coach played down talks about his relationship with Jose Mourinho, saying his focus is to make sure his team wins.

“I do not make of it a managers fight. What I want is that my team turns up and plays with a stronger performance," Wenger said.

"I am open always in life for everything, you know, for peace."

And on the injury front, Wenger says Granit Xhaka will miss the game due to injury but revealed that Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi are back in training.

“Lucas Perez is back in training but I think he will miss the next two days, he got a little problem yesterday.

“We have still Xhaka who is out from the kick he got from the game and Mustafi is back in normal training.”
