Westwood Enjoys Emotional Win In Sun City

Lee Westwood was left emotional after he claimed his first European Tour victory in four years at the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City.

The 45-year-old Englishman, who had not tasted success since the Malaysian Open in 2014, started the day three shots off the lead but produced an impressive round, which included six birdies and an eagle, to record an eight-under-par 64.

That was enough to move Westwood on to 15-under for the tournament, three clear of overnight leader Sergio Garcia, and the former world number one was delighted to claim his third Nedbank title and the 24th European Tour crown of his career.

“I’m a bit emotional to be honest,” said Westwood on Sky Sports. “You’re never sure whether you’re going to be able to do it again. “Until now my emotions felt really under control all day, which is what I’ve been working hard on.

I was just trying to hit fairways, stick to my game-plan and hit it in the right places. “I’ve got a bit of a process I’m going through with my golf swing, I’m starting to see better shots; the seven iron into 17 is probably one of the best shots I’ve ever hit and it all just worked.”

South African Louis Oosthuizen had looked like threatening Westwood’s victory charge, but despite the backing of the home fans, he faded late on and finished third another shot further back on 11 under.
