What Is Your View About The Reward System In Nigerian Sports?

On Tuesday, 12th August 2014, Nigerian football family remembered the demise of a former national team hero, Samuel Sochuma Okwaraji who died while serving his fatherland.

Okwaraji slumped and died 25 years ago at the Lagos National Stadium during an Italia ’90 World Cup qualifier against Angola.


There has been calls by some football technocrats for the memory of the late Okwaraji to be immortalised.

Some have called for the naming of the Lagos National Stadium, Lagos after Okwaraji. Others have suggested that the family he left behind be taken care of by the Federal Government.

The late USA ’94 World Cup star, Thompson Oliha, died without fulfilling his desire to own a house as promised by the Federal Government after the Super Eagles’ 1994 African Cup of Nations triumph in Tunisia.

This unpleasant history of apoor reward system may have been instigating the several of today’s Nigerian football players to press for payment of their entitlements from the Football authority before filing out to represent their fatherland on the field of play.

  • Is a good idea to help our ex-National footballers . They are really suffering now some of them that do not have godfathers in the top level , I think we can start from there as it will change a family life .

    Let us settle the problem of this country first because Nigeria still has a long way to go because the country are still backward in any level.. No electricity no security, water, road and etc….
