Williams Makes US Open Final

Serena Williams has powered her way into the US Open final, defeating Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 6-0 at Flushing Meadows. Williams will now look to wrap up her 24th Grand Slam singles title, her first since giving birth last year, and equal the record set by Margaret Court.

The 36-year-old will play either fellow American Madison Keys or Japan’s Naomi Osaka in Saturday’s final after disposing of Sevastova in just 66 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams is grateful for the chance, admitting she is lucky to still be playing, never mind challenging for titles.

“It is really incredible, a year ago I was literally fighting for my life at the hospital after having the baby,” said Williams, who missed last year’s US Open due to the birth of her child Olympia.

“Every day I step out on this court I am so grateful to have an opportunity to play this sport. So no matter what happens in any match, I already feel like I have already won.”
Sevastova says she will learn from the experience and move on, adding: “So many games I was in front in my service game. Somehow they slipped away,” Sevastova said.

“She has an amazing serve. It’s tough to return. She makes so much pressure on the first, second ball.”
