Williams Shuts Down League Return Rumours

Sonny Bill Williams says he’s not looking to return to rugby league and is focused on representing New Zealand at the 2019 World Cup. The 33-year-old has made the successful switch from union to league twice during his career, winning the Premiership title with both the Canterbury Bulldogs and Sydney Roosters.

Having been a part of the last Roosters side that won the NRL title in 2013, rumours have recently suggested the Sydney franchise are keen to tempt Williams back to the 13-a-side version of the sport.
However, Williams seems content to stick with union for the time being, having penned a contract that ties him to the New Zealand set-up until after next year’s World Cup in Japan.

He told the Alan Jones Breakfast Show on 2GB: “I’m here in New Zealand, I’m 33. I can’t believe these kinds of rumours still float around.
“I’m trying to stay on the paddock, more so than anything.”
Asked about wanting to represent the All Blacks at a third World Cup, he added: “One hundred per cent. I’ve got one more year left on my contract, which is 2019. God willing, I’m a part of that.”
