Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admits there is work to be done to find Esteban Ocon a drive next season and he might have to miss the year. Ocon is currently in his second season with Force India but it looks as though he will be forced to leave at the end of the year as businessman Lawrence Stroll has taken over the team and been tipped to recruit his son, Lance, from Williams.
That would leave Ocon searching for a new seat as the likes of McLaren, Renault and Toro Rosso all decided against hiring him due to the fact he is a Mercedes junior driver.
Wolff recognises that it is a tough situation and hopes things can be resolved, but is not ruling out the possibility of Ocon being absent from the 2019 campaign.
“We are at a crossroads at the moment,” he told Sky Sports F1. “We are going to see how it pans out with George Russell and Esteban and then decide how we continue. It doesn’t feel right for someone like Esteban to sit out a year, but we have seen it in the past.
“I believe that the market is going to be very different again in the early summer next year, not only with us but also with some of the other teams.
“Some doors will open, others will remain closed, and it’s just about finding the next right opportunity for Esteban.”Copyright © 2021 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
