Wolff Backs Vettel After Monza Woes

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has defended Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in the wake of criticism over his recent mistakes. The Italian media was fiercely critical of the German driver and blamed him for a coming-together with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton at Monza last time out.

It led to a fourth-place finish for the 31-year-old as Hamilton took the chequered flag to open up a 30-point gap at the top of the standings.

With Ferrari seemingly having a superior car to Mercedes and more straight-line speed, many pundits felt that Vettel would be the man to beat and the Brit would be playing catch-up, but mistakes have cost him dear.

However, Wolff was quick to remind people that the margins between success and failure are fine and Hamilton’s rival has the right pedigree to succeed.

“I’m not completely neutral, but for me Lewis is the best driver of recent years,” he told Die Welt newspaper. “Even so, I find the criticism of Sebastian not quite fair.

“If possible to win, he has the ambition to do it with the necessary aggression. That requires a lot of courage and his way of driving sometimes leads to collisions. But let’s not forget that he won four world championships. As I do with Lewis, you have to accept that.

“It could easily have been Lewis instead of Sebastian who spun, then the whole Grand Prix would have been different.”
