Cristiano Ronaldo saw a first minute goal ruled out for offside but left-back Rodriguez calmly slotted his spot kick in the 18th minute to put Wolfsburg ahead.

The stadium erupted in joy again when Arnold latched on to a precise pass deep inside the Real Madrid box, which was sent by Bruno Henrique Pinto, and he beat keeper Keylor Navas with a low shot into the middle of the goal to make it 2-0 for the Germans in the 24th minute.

Zinedine Zidane’s team battled hard to score a vital away goal but it never came.

At the Parc de Princes Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a goal and missed a penalty as Paris Saint Germain were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester City.

Bacary Sagna carelessly plunged himself under the feet of David Luiz who will miss the second leg due to card offenses but Zlatan Ibrahimovic lost the resultant penalty Joe Hart diving to his right to save the tame effort in the 13th minute.

Kevin De Bruyne pounced on a through pass in the 38th minute from Fernandinho after Blaise Matuidi lost the ball in midfield and fired past Kevin Trapp in PSG goal to make it 1-0 advantage Manchester City.

Ibrahimovic soon redeemed himself as he scored an equaliser thanks to some very poor defending from City at the edge of the box with four minutes to the end of the first half.

In the 59th minute, PSG made it 2-1 through Adrien Rabiot who was in the right place at the right time to pounce on the rebound inside the box.

Fernandinho restored parity for City with 17 minutes left on the clock when he fired a rebound home after sloppy defending by PSG.

The scoreline remained 2-2 until the end of the game.
