Woodland Leads The Way At Bellerive

Gary Woodland was happy to "get rolling" as he leads the US PGA Championship by one shot thanks to a first-round six-under 64.

The 34-year-old American has never recorded a top-10 finish at a major tournament so far in his career, but he has given himself hope of success at Bellerive Country Club in Missouri with an opening bogey followed by seven birdies, including five on the back-nine to edge ahead.

Home favourite, Woodland, who is 44th in the world rankings, said: "I hit bad shots on one and two, feeling the pressure early. But I really settled in and played great outside of that.

"It was nice to get the jitters off early and get rolling. I saw some putts go in." Rickie Fowler, who is bidding to claim a first major of his career having had second-placed finishes at all four events, including this year's Masters at Augusta National, is breathing down Woodland's neck after hitting six birdies in his round of 65.

South Africa's Brandon Stone and fellow American Zach Johnson sit another shot further back, while England's Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, plus world number one Dustin Johnson, are in a group of 11 players on three under.
