World Cup Draw: Rohr Wants Germany In Nigeria’s Group, Targets 2nd Round

World Cup Draw: Rohr Wants Germany In Nigeria’s Group, Targets 2nd Round

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr expects his team to be drawn in a tough group in today’s 2018 FIFA World Cup draw in Moscow.

Against the wishes of many Nigerians, Rohr would prefer to be drawn against reigning world champions Germany as they have struggled to win against African opposition in recent games at the World Cup.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil Germany played a 2-2 draw against Ghana in the group stage and in the Round of 16, they also needed an extra time goal to defeat Algeria.

“I know Germany very well and sometimes they have difficulties against African teams,” Rohr told BBC Sport.

“Drawing Germany would be very nice but for my mother it would be difficult – because she is for Germany!

“We will have a difficult group because we are in the last pot and we are supposed to have big teams with us. We are realistic, we wait for the draw and afterwards, we will organise our planning and our friendly games.

“We will do our best and it will be a wonderful adventure in any case.”

The Super Eagles are ranked 50th in the world, which is why they are in Pot 4.

“We are now paying the bill for the bad results two years ago,” Rohr added.

“Since I arrived, I think we have moved up 17-18 places so we have a better FIFA ranking now. All the teams in our group will be good because they have a higher level in FIFA.

“The minimum target is to have a good performance and have a good attitude.

“It would be wonderful if we could get out of the group and then from there, we are outsiders – but we are ambitious also. We would like to do very well, win some points and qualify for the last 16.

“They did it in 2014 and lost against France but last time they were in Pot 3 and now we are Pot 4, so it will be more difficult.

“But let’s try. We already made a good surprise in our qualifiers and now we would like to do another surprise.”

  • whats wrong if he says so…, could he have said he is afraid of Germany and other big teams??? If we prepare very well ofcourse we can match them. The result of Argentina friendly is enough to boost our confidence. Argentina had all thier big names apart from Messi but of course there was no Moses and Ighalo in our squard too. I see a better supper Eagles in Russia 2018 and I have confidence in the team, I support Rorh. Even FIFA confirmed it that supper Eagles are one of the best team to qualify for the tournament and has the youngest players… So all you Nigerian haters SHUT UP!!!!

  • Hmmmm come down coach.big team in open match of Nigeria is alway difficult.

  • Be careful what you wish for “Rorh” cos pride goes before….. Downfall and sack letter from “RESULT ORIENTED NFF AND IMPATIENT NIGERIANS”

  • Is this guy good enough to get a World Cup chance?

  • Yes, we need the tough teams like Germany, Brazil, Portugal and Argentina. We fear no foe. We are ready for any team. Come on Super Eagles.

  • One thing is very clear we cannot run away from any team in pot 1-3, the only teams we can avoid are those in the same pot with us.

This is the same atmosphere we found ourselves in 1994 &1998.People were saying we go chop 6 frm Bulgaria, 7 from Argentina, that we can only manage a draw wt Greece,a debutant like us then. What happened? 1998 Spain was red hot & Bulgaria was still in their true element, what happened? we beat them. This present squad possess enough ammunition to face any team.Never take the friendly against Argentina as a fluke. No country goes to war wt a friendly smile. Two goals down & reply wt 4 wasn’t a joke.l love this squad.lt has a cream & ingredients of a world cup team. The only thing is they shouldn’t be complacency.Thank God we were lowly rank.Nigeria always rise to a big occasion.Remember Nigeria spirit.Good luck to my newly built & technically gifted super eagles.

  • We don’t need to fear any team coz u must meet dey all to get to the final. They should be scare of us too. Bring it on Eagle is ready for any of them coz in football no big here.

I concur with our coach. After all, despite losing to Argentina at USA ’94, we eventually top our group. Our playing against Germany in opening match will give us confidence to face othes win or lose.

  • Aim at winning any opponent that comes on your way.All the best to African teams .

  • I don’t know how most Nigerians think. Only just name, Una don accept defeat. It’s 11 vs 11. Just like u guys are scared of them, so are they also scared of u. Low thinking people. If u don’t believe in super eagles excelling at the world cup. Sit ur ass down n shut up.

  • The man never no Nigeria team, wen our team join wit tough teams u will see complain of the players over there game’s salary, because them new that them will lose the next game, which will be knockout stage.

  • I am yet to come to terms with those Nigerians who want us to play any team in this first round. It only tells me one thing that these Nigerians are not football followers. They know nothing about the Nigerian Eagles’ strength and the rest of the world. Any football follower will know that no team will like to play a tough team from the start for the simple reason that they will like to progress far into the competition. This is not hard to reason out. There are some teams that any one will like to avoid. Brazil, Germany, Spain, Belgium, France, Argentina and England are in that category of teams to avoid if possible. So it is foolhardy and suicidal to wish us to play those teams. Rohr is our coach and all coaches play mind games. So he is at it. Let the games start. We love what he is doing. As he is playing the mind game with his fellow coaches all of them trying to outsmart the other and not giving any hint of fear and intimidation, we the fan should be realistic in our expectations. By all means if possible we should avoid in pot1: Germany, Brazil, France. pot2: Spain, England pot3: none. We wish the Eagles a favorable draw.

  • The results are out already:
    1. Nigeria
    2. Argentina
    3. Croatia &
    4. Iceland

  • Carl Ikeme no look ajebo too?Sometimes kpako is too rigid and gets frightened easily by oyibo stars, did you watch Akpeyi shaky shaky 1st half against Argentina?
