Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has denied that Arsenal are interested in signing him but believes Arsene Wenger admires him.
Former Everton defender Yobo is one of a number of free agents to have been linked with a switch to the Gunners, who are lacking in central defensive cover.
However, the 34-year-old whose last international commitment with Nigeria was at the summer’s World Cup in Brazil, where he reached a record 101 caps for the country, admits he is unaware of Arsenal’s interest.
He said: “I read Arsenal was interested in me, it was news to me. There is no formal contact with anybody.
“I know Arsene Wenger admires me a lot and wanted me to replace Sol Campbell some years ago, but Everton blocked the move.

“He wanted me to partner Kolo Toure in defence; I was younger then.
“If negotiations are taking place, I am not aware, maybe the club is speaking with my agent.”
Arsenal have lost Mathieu Debuchy for three months due to injury forcing their main back-up to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, Calum Chambers, to play at right-back.
The Gunners on Tuesday night lost 2-1 to Southampton at home in the Capital One Cup with Wenger naming a back-line comprising Chambers, Hector Bellerin, Isaac Hayden and Francis Coquelin.
