Yobo Slams Fifth Columnists

By Mumini Alao in Cuiaba:

SUPER Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has hit out at those he described as fifth columnists trying to cause divisions within the Nigerian camp at the World Cup.

Yobo was not gloating because Nigeria defeated Bosnia Herzegovina 1-0 last Saturday. The centurion-chasing skipper spoke at a press conference that preceded their final training session at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba a day BEFORE the Eagles took on the east Europeans. Complete Sports was there.

“We have been hearing about the stories making the round in some newspapers that there are divisions in our camp, that the players are fighting each other, that some of us are fighting the coach and stuff like that.

“I am the captain of the team, my coach is here (Stephen Keshi sat next to him) and I can say to you here that there is nothing like a division in our team. We are united, the spirit in our camp is good, we are here for a common goal and we are working hard towards that goal.”

Yobo admits that the speculations on in-fighting are built on some previous events in the squad. “I can speak on that because I’ve been involved (in some of the past issues). But right now, we are only thinking about how to make our country proud and I can’t understand why some people are just determined to divide us.”

Yobo then dropped a warning shot: “I will be speaking out about some people after this World Cup on the roles they’re playing to divide and destroy our national team. But first, we have to finish the business that brought us here.”

Standing in for the injured Godfrey Oboabona about 24 hours later, Yobo went on to put in a stellar performance as Nigeria defeated Bosnia Herzegovina 1-0.
