Yoshida Admits Saints’ Form Not Good Enough

Maya Yoshida admits Southampton simply have not been good enough this season and the threat of another relegation fight haunts him.

Saints have had a dismal start to the season and sit in 17th place in the Premier League table – only outside the bottom three due to the fact they have a one-goal better goal difference than Cardiff City directly below them.

With just one win so far, the pressure has been mounting on boss Mark Hughes but Yoshida says the players are feeling it as well. The defender feels performances and results have not been anywhere near good enough and knows things must improve quickly or another relegation scrap looms in the second half of the season.

“Of course, I’m worried about it [relegation],” he said in the Daily Echo. “If you see the table, it says we only have eight points which isn’t enough. “It definitely isn’t good. I’ve been worried about it since the beginning because we were in trouble last season and we barely stayed up.”

Saints face bottom-placed Fulham, who have just sacked manager Slavisa Jokanovic and replaced him with Claudio Ranieri, in what is shaping up to be a crunch game following the international break (November 24), before tougher tests against Manchester United and Spurs follow.

Yoshida believes they need results soon and is aware the Cottagers clash, in particular, is vital. He added: “It’s not enough. Every matchday, the fans are spending money and we need to perform better. We have to win. “We strive to make a strong squad, but we couldn’t get good results in the last 11 games.

Sometimes we lose our confidence and it looks like we are scared to play. “It is really difficult after a 6-1 defeat to Man City, but after that game we showed passion. Everyone is still fighting and that is a positive thing.

“We have an important game against Fulham. We have to stay positive for the Fulham game because it is going to be really, really massive for us.”
