Yoshida Urges Saints Improvement

Southampton defender Maya Yoshida knows his side have to improve greatly once they return from the international break.

The Saints currently sit just two points and two places above the Premier League relegation zone after winning only one of their eight league games to date this term, while they have failed to register a point or goal from any of their last three top-flight matches.

Japan international Yoshida, who made his first league appearance of the season in Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea, has now demanded a huge improvement from his side after the international break, starting with their trip to the Vitality Stadium to take on South Coast rivals Bournemouth on October 20.

“We need to get back in really good condition when we restart the Premier League because October/November is a really important time for us,” Yoshida was quoted as saying by the Daily Echo.

“For the derby [at Bournemouth] we have to show more fight, we have to show our good spirit.”

Southampton’s home form has been a particular bone of contention of late, as they have only won one of their last 15 league games at St Mary’ Stadium, a run that stretches back to December last year.

Yoshida admits their poor home record is difficult to explain, but he believes one win could change their fortunes considerably.

The 30-year-old added: “[Our home form] is really difficult to explain, but one win can make a big difference. We need to get back on track as soon as possible.”
