Nigeria will play in the men’s football event of the 2015 All Africa Games after the Dream Team VI’s 2-1 win over their Zambian rivals at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka Sunday afternoon.
Taiwo Awoniyi’s strike in the 34th minute gave Nigeria’s U23 national side a 1-0 half-time lead over Zambia in the game.
The away side came within inches of breaking the deadlock in the fourth minute when Godwin Saviour burst clear of the defence and placed a low shot which the keeper confidently gathered.
Nineteen minutes later the hosts did hit the upright, with goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel well beaten.
However on a counter, Nigeria caused a moment of panic and they were in front in the 34th minute, Flying Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi scoring for the team coached by Samson Siasia.
Nigeria almost made it two just before halftime but the Zambian keeper kept it out at a second grab.
Siasia seemed to want to set his team defensively when he introduced left-back Abdullahi Mustapha for Bernard Bulbwa in the 52nd minute.
Moments later, Nigerian keeper Emmanuel Daniel pulled a great save.
In the 65th minute, the Zambians exerted good moments of pressure are camped in Nigeria’s defensive half.
Zambia equalised through Friday Samu in the 76th minute from close range after he was set up by Shedrack Malambo.
The hosts sensed their team could win it but Taiwo Awoniyi scored his second goal in the 86th minute to hand the advantage.
The game ended 2-1 in favour of Nigeria but the team had difficulty leaving the stadium as they were barred by the Zambian fans who threw objects at them during the latter stages of the game.
