Zidane Wary Of Atletico Comeback As Simeone Refuses To Give Up

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane says he expects a very difficult second leg against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League second leg semi-final next week.

Zidane’s side will take a comfortable 3-0 first leg win to the Vicente Calderon thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick in Tuesday’s first leg clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But despite the healthy first leg advantage, Zidane stated that his team will still have to work extra hard to qualify for the final.

“We played well,” Zidane said in his post-match press conference.

“We still have the second leg. We will have to work hard and fight for it. We will suffer at their place for sure.”

The 2002 Champions League winner with Madrid showered plaudits on his players for their performance against Atletico.

He added: “I’m lucky to have these players. We try to play football and enjoy ourselves. It works because our great players have great attitudes.”

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid mamager Diego Simeone has expressed confidence that his side can overturn their 3-0 UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg deficit against Real Madrid next week.

Tuesday hat-trick hero Cristiano became the first player to reach over 50 UEFA Champions League knockout stage goals and also the first player in history to score back-to-back Champions League hat-tricks in the knockout stages.

In his post-match press conference, Simeone however insisted that the unpredictability of football gives his team a chance ahead of the second leg.

“It’s hard, but it’s football. These things happen,” Simeone said.

“We are going to try until the end, until the final whistle is blown in the 2nd leg.

“Football is a marvellous game and anything can happen. I still think we have a chance of going through.”

The last time Madrid lost to a Spanish team in the semi-finals of the Champions League was in the 2010/2011 season against Barcelona.
